WE’RE UP………AND (ALMOST) RUNNING!
Two o’clock on the afternoon of Saturday 11 April was an exciting time at Balerno Bowling Club as Honorary Member Bill Stark raised our new flag to herald in our 2009 bowling season. Six full rinks of players then enjoyed their first game at Balerno this year on a green that was in splendid condition thanks to Greens Consultant Tom Murray and Green Ranger Frank Millan.
Unfortunately, other teams are finding the green so good to play on that we are having difficulty beating them! However, our results are improving and we have a long way to go. Given the great but friendly rivalry we have with our near neighbours I am pleased to report that after three close opening defeats our First XVI won their fourth game against Currie BC by 3 – 2.
Surprisingly (?) my return from holiday has not yet provided the inspiration for the Second XVI to gain their first success – our latest setback coming at Currie with a 31/2 to 11/2 deficit! But I am sure we are on the verge of a winning streak!
Our Ladies Section have had some early successes and are looking forward to the start of their East of Scotland League games and their Scottish ties. Early congratulations go to the rink of Elspeth Oliver, Allison Clark, Jean Crawford and skip Elizabeth Rogers who won our internal Rink Competition.
Our Senior Teams are having a mixed start to the season but they always have fun and enjoy great camaraderie whatever the result. Word has it that one of our Seniors found he had only brought one shoe for an away tie in the SBA Rink Competition. On hearing this a team mate suggested he must have thought he was playing in the first leg and was keeping his other shoe for the second leg! They’re sharp our Seniors!
On the Social front, our end April Cabaret night saw a full house of members and guests enjoying a fabulous night of entertainment listening and dancing to Abbamania, a tribute band who were so like the real thing that they well merit their forthcoming stint in Las Vegas. We have similarly high expectations of our end May and June nights when members and guests will respectively enjoy the music of 60s pop star Christian and the Kirk James Experience (a night for musical lovers).
Sadly, I have to report the loss of two members – Jim Brown and Danny Moggie – the latter being a bowler of long standing. Our thoughts and prayers are with their respective wives Lorna and Dagne and their families at this difficult time.
